Mostafa Kamal Nannu, Tangail:
Large potholes on the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge highway have caused frequent accidents, despite repeated reports by electronic and print media. However, authorities have consistently failed to take effective action.
Frustrated by the negligence, M.A. Razzak, Tangail correspondent for 71 TV, decided to take matters into his own hands. He began repairing the damaged road segments at his own expense.
Razzak formally requested assistance from both the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) and the Traffic Division for safety measures during the repairs. While the Traffic Division responded with full support, the RHD offered no cooperation.
“I live near the highway and have personally witnessed many tragic accidents. As a human being, it was painful to stand by and do nothing,” said Razzak. “After getting no results from the authorities, I finally decided to act on my own.”
Local resident Mozammel Haque Hiru said, “I commute on this road daily. Rebar from the broken concrete had made the road dangerous and unfit for use. Accidents were happening almost every day. We are deeply grateful to journalist Razzak for his selfless initiative.”
Tangail’s Superintendent of Police, Md. Mizanur Rahman, said, “After receiving Razzak’s request, we directed the Traffic Division to provide full support. The people of Tangail will always receive our cooperation for such noble efforts.”
