Journalist couple Shakil Ahmed and Farzana Rupa have been placed on a five-day police remand in connection with a murder case in Mirpur.
Prior to this, they had been remanded twice in another case filed at Adabor Police Station.On Monday (February 17), Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq granted the remand after a hearing.
Inspector Nasir Uddin Sarker of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) sought a five-day remand for further interrogation. State prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi argued in favor of the remand, while no defense lawyer was present in the court.According to the case statement, Anwar Hossain Patwari was shot dead at Mirpur Gol Chattar on the day of the government transition.
His father, Al Amin Patwari, subsequently filed a murder case at Mirpur Model Police Station.Shakil Ahmed and Farzana Rupa are former journalists of Ekattor Television. Shakil was the news head, while Rupa served as the principal correspondent.
Following the shift in power, the couple attempted to leave the country on August 21 but were arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
Later, they were shown arrested in connection with a murder case filed at Adabor Police Station and were taken into police custody for questioning twice.Now, the couple is being interrogated under a fresh remand. Their next legal course will depend on the progress of the investigation.
