NTV’s Joypurhat Sadar and Panchbibi’s online correspondent, Monowar Hossain, were attacked for publishing news. After a case was filed at the police station in Aymarsulpur Union of Panchbibi Upazila of Joypurhat, the police conducted a raid and arrested the accused female UP member Nurbanu. She was sent to jail through a court on Wednesday afternoon. The arrested Nurbanu is a female UP member of Wards 4, 5, and 6 of Aymarsulpur Union.
It is known that a few months ago, journalist Monowar published a news story titled “Male member in love with female member” on NTV Online. Since then, Nurbanu and another UP member Anwar Hossain became angry with him. Last Tuesday, at around 4:30 pm, when journalist Monowar Hossain went to the Aymarsulpur land office premises to collect news, Nurbanu and Anwar systematically attacked him. At that time, they abused him and beat him up. After this incident, the local journalist community and the general public strongly condemned it. Later, when a case was filed at night, the police arrested Nurbanu from her house that night.
Eyewitness journalist Morsalin said that when he went to the land office to gather news, two members got angry and stormed in upon seeing Monowar. Then, they started abusing him and attacked him. Journalist Monowar Hossain, who was attacked, said, “The attack on me for publishing news is a direct threat to the media. I respect the law and demand a fair trial in this incident.”
In this regard, Panchbibi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Imayedul Zahedi said, “A case has been registered in connection with the attack on the journalist. One person has been arrested. Efforts are underway to arrest the other accused.”
