Adviser to the ministries of Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Sharmeen S Murshid on Wednesday laid emphasis on objectivity, truthfulness, and informative value of journalism, describing it as a sacred duty and a trust placed by the people.
“Dessiminating information that is objective, logical, and backed by scientific analysis – especially with courage – is crucial…It would help the younger generation recognize journalism as a sacred duty, trust, and voice of people,” she added.
The adviser made these remarks at the inauguration ceremony of the online portal “Bangla Edition” in a city hotel, according to a ministry press release.
Sharmeen also expressed concern over the declining standards of bold, objective and honest journalism within the country’s media landscape.
She voiced optimism that the Bangla Edition news portal would usher in a new era of integrity and excellence in news presentation.
At the inauguration event, Bangla Edition Chairman and journalist-columnist Elias Hossain, journalist-columnist Kanak Sarwar, and writer, activist, and social thinker Pinaki Bhattacharya addressed the audience via online platform.
Among others present at the event were family members of the martyrs and the injured from the July Mass Uprising, senior leaders of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, media personalities, and representatives of civil society.
The Adviser said, “With the emergence of the Bangla Edition online portal, I believe a courageous new voice will be unveiled in the realm of journalism – one where truth, combined with technology, objectivity, integrity, depth, and cultural engagement, will come alive with pride. The public should be able to embrace the speed of journalism.”
Sharmeen S Murshid stressed the importance of putting an end the yellow journalism. She said the launch of the Bangla Edition should signal a new chapter – one where people are no longer defamed without proof and good individuals are not unfairly targeted.
