JnUCSU polls halted following Khaleda Zia’s departure

The Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JnUCSU) and hall union elections, scheduled to begin today December 30, have been postponed due to the death of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia as well as the new date is fixed for January 6, 2026. Earlier, the decision to postpone the JnUCSU elections was taken in an emergency syndicate meeting.
confirmed the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Rezaul Karim. The official announcement of the postponement of the elections came at 9:15 am Tuesday and after a few hours later , election commissioner declared the new schedule January 6,2025 in a press release.
Besides, in the morning, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Rezaul Karim announced the postponement of the elections, mourning the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. Immediately after the announcement of the postponement of the elections, angry students and candidates started protesting on the campus. They surrounded the Vice Chancellor’s building for several hours and staged a protest.
In the face of the students’ intense agitation, a syndicate meeting was called again. After the meeting, the Vice Chancellor assured the students, “We respect the students’ emotions. Although the voting was postponed due to the emerging situation, a new date has been set as soon as possible in view of the students’ demands. The JnUCSU and Hall Parliament elections will be held on January 6.”
