JnU students-police clash leaves hundreds injured

The students of Jagannath University (JnU) with their teachers on Wednesday brought out a protest rally towards Jamuna to meet Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus to press home their three major demands, including housing scholarship for the seventy percent students of the University.

As the protesters heading toward the Jamuna, police obstructed them using tear gas and sound grenades. More than a hundred people, including faculty, students and journalists, were injured in this clash. In protest, the teachers and students staged a sit-in in front of the Kakrail Mosque crossing.

The police action came when the university students crossed the Matsya Bhaban and reached the Kakrail Mosque crossing.

Earlier, more than one thousand students of Jagannath University left the campus for Jamuna to meet with the Chief Advisor. The march first encountered barricade at Gulistan Mazar point.

The JnU students crossed the police barricade again and proceeded to Matsya Bhaban. As soon as the students’ march reached the Kakrail Mosque crossing mode, the police suddenly started throwing tear gas, sound grenades, and hot water. About a hundred students, including university teachers and students, were injured.

University Teachers’ Association General Secretary Professor Dr. Md. Rois Uddin, English Department Teacher Nasiruddin, History Department Teacher Prof. Belal, Assistant Proctor Naeem Siddiqui, Journalists’ Association General Secretary Mahatab Hossain Limon, Dhaka Tribune’s JnU correspondent Sohanur Rahman, and The Daily New Nation’s JnU correspondent Md Abdur Rakib were injured in the tear gas. Besides, a number of students were admitted to Dhaka medical college for primary treatment including many media persons.
