A Dhaka court sentenced Tithi Sarkar, a temporarily suspended student of Jagannath University (JnU), to five years in the prison in a case filed under the Digital Security Act (DSA) for making derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad (Pbuh).
Dhaka Cyber Tribunal Judge Julfiqer Hayat passed the order on Monday.
The case was filed against Tithi, her husband Shiplu Mollik and some other people with Paltan Police Station in the capital on November 2 of 2020.
The Investigation Officer of the case and Sub Inspector of the CID police Mehedi Hasan submitted the charge sheet of the case against two people to the court on May 19, 2021.
Dhaka Cyber Tribunal Judge Assams Jaglul Hossain framed charge against Tithi and exempted her husband from the case on November 4 of that year.
Meanwhile, Tithi has been suspended from her organization Chhatra Odhikar Parishad for hurting religious sentiments.
Tithi was also expelled from the university on the same ground in an order signed by the Registrar of the university on October 26 that year.
