On the night of March 15 , 2024 Jagannath University (JnU) student Fairuz Abantika committed suicide by writing a suicide note on her Facebook ID. It has been a year since her death. Before her death, she blamed a classmate and an assistant proctor for her death in a Facebook post. She was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her home in Cumilla and shifted to a local hospital where doctors confirmed her dead.
At that time, the administration formed an investigation committee within 24 hours on March 16, 2024 and ordered to submit a report within seven days, but the university administration did not publish this investigation report even in a year.
Although the accused teacher Deen Islam and student Amman were immediately expelled, they stood by their decision.
The police report has not even been published so far. Abantika’s mother filed a case in this incident, but no charge sheet has been filed.
It is known that on March 16, 2024, the university authorities formed a five-member investigation committee, and the other members of the investigation committee, convened by the former president of the University Teachers’ Association, Zakir Hossain, are the dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Abul Hossain, the dean of the Faculty of Law, Masum Billah, the chairman of the Music Department, Jhumur Ahmed, and lawyer Ranjan Kumar. This committee submitted the investigation report to the university administration on June 13, 2024. Although the investigation report was finally submitted to the syndicate, no decision was taken. Even this report was not published after a year past of her mysterious suicide.
