A campus sculpture titled ‘Anjali Loho Mor’ was quietly demolished at Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) during the student vacation, sparking controversy among faculty and students.
University sources confirmed that the demolition was ordered by the current Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Md Jahangir Alam, and carried out under the direction of the Planning and Development Office. The artwork, installed in January 2024 as part of a Tk 4-crore renovation project, cost around Tk 15 lakh and stood near the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
Constructed under the previous VC, Prof Dr Soumitra Sekhar, the sculpture was removed without public notice or consultation. While some officials denied knowledge, Planning Director Md Hafizur Rahman stated, “The new administration chose not to accept the sculpture. The VC gave the order. Some students opposed it earlier.”
However, no student groups have claimed responsibility or demanded its removal. Leaders from Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir denied involvement.
Acting VC Prof Dr Zainul Abedin Siddiqui mentioned the sculpture was part of a set of “controversial initiatives” discussed with faculty, but no formal decision had been publicized.
Faculty members expressed frustration over the move. “This isn’t progress — it’s erasure,” said Associate Professor Md Tanzil Hossain. “The sculpture could’ve been modified, not destroyed,” added Fine Arts faculty member Al Monjur Elahi.
The piece, inspired by artist Munmun Ahmed and sculpted by Monindra Pal, was modeled on a photograph of Ahmed’s hand. “No one explained the removal. I’m heartbroken,” said Ahmed.
Pal said Tk 7 lakh from the contract remains unpaid. Despite multiple inquiries, the administration has not responded.
Students expressed disappointment, calling the removal unnecessary and financially irresponsible.
