JCD voices support for BUET students
DU Correspondent :
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) student wing, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), has declared its support for the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) students’ campaign for a campus free of political influence.
The announcement was made during a press conference at the Sagor-Runi Auditorium of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in Segunbagicha, Dhaka, on Wednesday.
“We respect the BUET students’ stance and JCD stands with them in their movement against non-partisan politics on their campus,” said Rakibul Islam, the central president of JCD, in a prepared statement.
Referencing the murder of Abrar Fahad and the subsequent student protests, the JCD leader remarked, “The prohibition of student politics has brought a sense of relief and security to BUET students, effectively shutting down the Chhatra League’s so-called torture cells on campus.
However, in all public universities and colleges, including Dhaka University, the oppressive practices of the Chhatra League persist.”
JCD accuses the Chhatra League of attempting to reinstate their dominance and torture cells at BUET under the guise of student politics. The statement further highlighted, “The fear and concern of BUET students regarding the disruption of academic activities and insecurity caused by the Chhatra League’s presence are legitimate and understandable.”
Additionally, JCD criticized the Chhatra League’s argument for reinstating student politics on campus as a constitutional right, calling it a “harsh deception.”
JCD advocates for the peaceful coexistence of all political groups within academic institutions.
“All political organizations should have the freedom to engage in political activities within campuses and halls, ensuring they have the opportunity to express their views openly,” JCD emphasized.
The press conference was led by JCD Central General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir. Senior Vice President Abu Afsan Mohammad Yahya, Senior Joint General Secretary Shyamal Malum, Organizing Secretary Amanullah Aman, along with DU unit President Ganesh Chandra Roy and General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon, were also in attendance.
