A violent clash erupted between leaders and activists of the Jatiya Party (JaPa) and Gano Adhikar Parishad in Dhaka’s Kakrail area on Friday evening.
The incident occurred around 6:15pm in front of the Jatiya Party central office, confirmed Arup Talukdar, duty officer at Ramna Police Station.
Following the confrontation, a large contingent of army personnel, along with police and other law enforcement agencies, was deployed to the scene to bring the situation under control.
Both parties have traded blame over the violence. JaPa leaders alleged that activists of the Gano Adhikar Parishad attacked them while marching past their office.
In contrast, leaders of the Gano Adhikar Parishad claimed that JaPa activists provoked the clash by throwing bricks and stones at their procession.
Abu Hanif, senior member and media coordinator of Gano Adhikar Parishad, told reporters, “Today we held a protest rally demanding a ban on the activities of Awami League’s collaborators. After the programme ended at our central office, we brought out a procession from Paltan Zero Point towards Nightingale Mor.
When we passed the Jatiya Party office, bricks and stones were hurled at us from behind.
At least 300-400 people were gathered in front of the JaPa office. We believe, apart from JaPa men, Awami League and Jubo League activists were also involved in the attack.”
He further claimed that 10-15 of their activists were injured in the incident, many of whom were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that the situation is now under control, with heavy security deployed in the area to prevent further clashes.
