Janata Jute Mills in Narsingdi closed following workers’ violence

Janata Jute Mills Ltd in Narsingdi Palash has been shut down indefinitely following an attack, vandalism, and looting, allegedly carried out by agitated workers.
The mill authorities issued a notice of closure on Saturday. The notice did not mention when the mill would resume operations.
The notice stated that from 3-6 September, a group of unidentified individuals engaged in riots, unlawful intimidation, and vandalism inside the mills. Under these circumstances, the authorities decided to suspend all production activities at the mill starting Saturday, under Section 12(1) of the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006.
Eligible workers will get their wages following the labour law and regulations.
All workers have been instructed to refrain from joining Janata Jute Mills until further notice, it added.
According to the authorities concerned, on Thursday (5 September), a group of agitated workers vandalised and looted the mill’s administrative building, labour office, security office, guest house, and other office rooms while presenting a 14-point demand.
Six security guards were injured in the incident.
Later, upon receiving the news, members of the police, Rab, and the Bangladesh Army arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.
