Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Mymensingh city and district units submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Mymensingh recently, demanding the issuance of a constitutional order and the holding of a referendum to implement the July National Charter ahead of the upcoming national election scheduled for February. The memorandum also reiterated their previously declared five-point demand.

At around 12:00 noon, a delegation led by Mymensingh City Ameer Maulana Kamrul Ahsan Emrul and District Ameer Md. Abdul Karim handed over the memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.

Earlier, several thousand leaders and activists brought out a procession that paraded through key streets of the city.

Among those present during the submission were Mymensingh District Naeb-e-Ameer Principal Kamrul Hasan Milon, Secretary Maulana Mozammel Haque Akand, Assistant Secretary Mahbubur Rashid Farazi, Mymensingh City Naeb-e-Ameer Asaduzzaman Sohel, Assistant Secretary Anwar Hasan Sujon, Organizing Secretary Professor Al Helal Talukdar, and leaders of various local branches.

According to the memorandum, after the mass uprising of July-August 2024, an interim government was formed in line with the people’s aspirations.

Based on the recommendations of reform commissions, the July National Charter was drafted to establish democracy, human rights, and justice.

However, while the electoral roadmap has already been announced, the government has yet to take effective steps to provide a legal basis for the July National Charter and to organize a national referendum on the issue.
The memorandum reiterated two key proposals from Jamaat-e-Islami.

Issuing a Constitutional Order to give legal effect to the July National Charter2. Holding a national referendum before the election to implement the Charter.

Jamaat warned that failing to provide legal legitimacy to the Charter would undermine the achievements of the people’s uprising, achieved through immense sacrifice.

The party also demanded that the upcoming election be held under the Proportional Representation (PR) system to ensure the proper value of each vote, prevent the use of black money, muscle power, and vote-rigging, and elect a quality parliament with competent lawmakers.

Additionally, they called for a ban on the activities of the Jatiya Party and the 14-party alliance for their alleged involvement in authoritarian practices during the previous regime.

The memorandum expressed concern over the government’s inaction in meeting popular demands, warning that it has created anxiety in the political arena.

Jamaat-e-Islami urged the government to ensure a free, fair, and credible election in February based on the five-point demand, guaranteeing people’s voting rights and building a just and accountable democratic state.
