The Jamaat-e-Islami has called for the Jatiya Party to be outlawed, mirroring the ban already placed on the Awami League.

The call came on Sunday evening after a meeting between Jamaat leaders and Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus at Jamuna, reports bdnews24.com.

Jamaat itself was banned by the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina four days before her government collapsed on Aug 5 last year.

Jamaat’s deputy chief Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher said the Jatiya Party had acted as an ally of what he termed was the “fascist” Awami League.
“We have clearly said that since the Jatiya Party was a collaborator of fascist Awami League, it can also be banned in the same way Awami League has been banned,” Taher said.

Tensions have been running high in political circles since Friday night, when clashes between Jatiya Party and National Citizen Party (NCP) activists led to joint forces baton-charging, leaving GonoOdhikarParoshad chief NurulHaqueNur seriously injured.

Political tensions have escalated since Friday night, when clashes between Jatiya Party and GonoOdhikarParishad activists prompted a baton-charge by joint forces, leaving Parishad chief NurulHaqueNur critically injured.
A judicial inquiry into the incident is ongoing.

Amid the fallout, several parties, including the NCP, have also demanded a ban on Jatiya Party.
Earlier on Sunday, Yunus held talks with three political parties as part of efforts to ease mounting political discord and prepare the ground for general elections, starting with Jamaat at 4:30pm.

The four-member delegation was led by Taher, joined by Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, Assistant Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan and Hamidur Rahman Azad.
