Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called for the United Nations’ support and technical assistance to ensure that the upcoming national elections are free, fair, and credible, describing the polls as “crucial for the nation’s future.”
The appeal was made during a courtesy meeting between Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Gwyn Lewis at the party chief’s office in Bashundhara on Tuesday, according to a press release.
Discussions during the meeting encompassed a wide range of issues, including Bangladesh’s prevailing political and human rights situation, the Rohingya crisis, and preparations for the forthcoming elections.
The Jamaat leaders expressed optimism about the UN’s continued role in advancing human rights, women’s empowerment, and skill development in Bangladesh. They also underscored the significance of UN engagement in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting inclusive national development. UN Human Rights Adviser Huma Khan accompanied Lewis at the meeting, which took place over breakfast in what was described as a “cordial and constructive atmosphere.”
Jamaat Secretary General Prof. Mia Golam Porwar and Supreme Court lawyer Mir Ahmad Bin Kasem (Arman) were also present.
