Amid ongoing debate over the potential resignation of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, senior leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami met with the Chief of Army Staff, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, on Saturday night in Dhaka.
According to party sources, Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman and Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher first held discussions with the Chief Adviser at his official residence, Jamuna. Following this meeting, the delegation proceeded directly to the Dhaka cantonment for an audience with the army chief.
Speaking to the media, Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher described the engagement with General Waker-Uz-Zaman as an informal courtesy call, initiated at the party’s interest. “We want a fair election,” he stated. “Jamaat has undertaken various initiatives to facilitate dialogue amid the current political situation. This meeting was part of those ongoing efforts.”
While no official agenda was disclosed, party insiders indicated that the meeting was intended to ease tensions between the interim government and the military leadership.
Sources also suggested that General Waker-Uz-Zaman had earlier met with leaders from another major political party, although this could not be independently verified.
The meeting comes at a time of heightened political sensitivity, as speculation continues over the stability of the interim government and the roadmap toward a national election.
