Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami assistant Secretary General, AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad, stressed that the people’s right to vote and the assurance of fair elections cannot be achieved without comprehensive national reforms. He highlighted the importance of prioritising electoral reform as the first step towards this goal.

Speaking as the chief guest at a conference organised by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami at the AK School auditorium in Barishal town on Friday, Azad noted that the interim government is currently focusing on implementing these crucial reforms.

He expressed Jamaat-e-Islami’s willingness to wait until the process is completed to ensure that reforms are carried out effectively and sustainably.

Hamidur Rahman Azad, who previously served as a lawmaker representing Cox’s Bazar-2, remarked that the success of the recent July-August movement depends on achieving lasting reforms within the country. He stressed that necessary changes to the electoral law are critical for sustaining the movement’s momentum and ensuring democratic progress.

During his speech, he accused the ousted Awami League government of committing acts of genocide at Shapla Chattar, condemning their past actions and calling for accountability in the country’s political landscape.
When questioned about the increasing prices of essential commodities, Azad highlighted the importance of economic stability in managing inflation.

He acknowledged the difficulties people face due to rising prices but emphasised that time is needed for the economic recovery process. According to him, ensuring economic stability is vital to creating a balanced environment where inflation can be controlled effectively.

The conference was presided over by Zahir Uddin Muhammad Babar, a member of the Barishal Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami, and attended by over five hundred leaders and activists from the party. The event served as a platform for discussing the party’s stance on electoral reforms, economic challenges, and the path forward for Bangladesh’s political future.
