Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has undergone a successful coronary artery bypass surgery at a private hospital in Dhaka.
“The procedure was completed without complications,” said renowned cardiologist Dr Jahangir Kabir, who performed the surgery, while speaking to reporters at the hospital on Saturday.
Dr Shafiqur is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is expected to be discharged within a week, he added.
The Jamaat chief had been admitted to United Hospital since mid-July, after falling ill during a party rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on July 19. He collapsed twice while delivering his speech and had to complete it while seated, before being taken for medical evaluation.
Nazrul Islam, his personal secretary, earlier said a series of medical tests had revealed the need for urgent cardiac surgery.
