A six-member delegation, led by Jatiya Ganotantrik Party (JAGPA) President Barrister Tasmia Pradhan, met with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin to discuss the party’s registration.
The delegation met the CEC on Monday at the Election Building in Agargaon, Dhaka. Recently, JAGPA regained its party registration through a High Court order.
During the meeting, JAGPA President Barrister Tasmia Pradhan urged the Election Commission (EC) to simplify the strict registration rules for pro-democracy and unregistered political parties.
The delegation included JAGPA Vice President and Party Spokesperson Rashed Pradhan, General Secretary Professor Iqbal Hossain, Presidium Member Asadur Rahman Khan, Dhaka Metropolitan Convener Shyamal Chandra Sarkar, and Jubo JAGPA President Nazrul Islam Babul.
After the meeting, JAGPA President Barrister Tasmia Pradhan told reporters, “In 2021, the previous EC, under the leadership of fascist Sheikh Hasina, illegally revoked our registration.
Following the Honorable High Court’s order, we regained our registration on March 19 after four years. In today’s meeting, we informed the EC about this matter. At the same time, we also drew their attention to simplifying the strict registration rules for pro-democracy and unregistered political parties in Bangladesh.”
Earlier, on January 28, 2021, the then EC revoked JAGPA’s registration, citing the party’s failure to meet the legal requirements for political party registration. The EC stated that the registration was canceled due to the party’s lack of offices and voters at both the district and upazila levels.
