The Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) Chess team clinched the team championship at the 9th National Chess Carnival was held at Notre Dame College in the capital recently.
The victorious IUB Mittens team featured Amit Bikram Roy (Computer Science and Engineering Department), Justin Mathias (International Relations Department), and guest players FM Sakline Mostafa of Rajarbag Police Lines School & College and Shatadru Shovan Dey.
Amit won five accolades – he secured first place in the Team Chess and Chess Puzzle events, finished runner-up in Solo Chess, and earned third-place in both Chess960 and Puzzle Relay.
Two other teams from IUB also competed in the tournament. Among them, Team IUB Thunders finished in 12th place, represented by Md Abu Hanif, Mohiul Alam (Computer Science and Engineering Department), Mehrab Al Maksud (English Language Teaching Department), and Arian Rahman (Accounting Department).
IUB’s teams were guided by Grandmaster Niaz Murshed, South Asia’s first Grandmaster and current Adviser to the university’s chess programme.
Organised by Notre Dame Chess Club, the carnival attracted teams from 16 universities nationwide and adhered to FIDE rules.
