‘It’s time to think about alternative of USD’

Former Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen advised to think about the alternative uses of the US dollar in foreign transactions from now to reduce the dependence of the currency. This is why the Bangladesh Bank should be given this leadership though it is not easy to implement because of it is something new.

Dr. AK Abdul Momen came up this comment at a discussion on “Trade in Yuan-Taka and Dollar Challenge in Bangladesh” organised by Education Research and Development Forum of Bangladesh (ERDFB) held at National Press Club on Friday as the chief guest.

He said that we need to discuss about this. Because nobody knows what will be happened tomorrow whether the condition we are in today.

“Suppose, we keep reserves many dollar like other countries. But If there is a war start between them, than the dollar will be turned in paper. So we should be alert about the upcoming world situation,” Momen said.

“If we can do the advance practice of using other currencies, then we will be able to manage ourselves if there is a sudden problem arise. So we should start this practice from now. We can do start initially this trial transactions with Yuan-Taka and Rupee-Taka,” said the former foreign minister.

Professor Dr. Sajjad Hossain, member of Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) presides over the programme while Vice-Chancellor (Acting) of Barisal University Professor Dr. Mohammad Badruzzaman Bhuiyan, Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Professor Dr. Md. Sharfuddin Ahmed, Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Professionals Professor Dr. Khondkar Mokaddem Hossain, Commissioner of Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission Professor Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Abdul Jabbar Khan, and among others spoke the programme.
