Public life has become miserable due to mosquito infestation. With the arrival of hot weather, the spread of mosquitoes has increased to a terrible extent. In the meantime, there has been a little rain. In this situation, Ishwardi residents are constantly plagued by mosquito bites day and night. Even during the day, mosquito coils have to be kept burning in offices, shops, and homes. And in the evening, the mosquito infestation increases several times. Residents of the municipality complain that the sewers and water bodies are not cleaned regularly. Although fogger machines are used every year to kill mosquitoes, there has been no mosquito killing activity this year due to the lack of medicine. Although there is a budget every year for mosquito killing, the municipal authorities have not taken any initiative to kill mosquitoes.
Talking to the residents, it was learned that the mosquito infestation has increased drastically with the change of season. This is disrupting people’s daily activities. Even by hanging coils, sprays or mosquito nets, there is no relief from the mosquito infestation. The locals are especially fed up with the increase in mosquito infestation after evening. No one is able to work normally. Despite the increase in mosquito infestation, the municipality is not playing any effective role in killing mosquitoes. The rainy season is already here. If steps are not taken now, the situation is likely to become more dire if the Aedes mosquito spreads.
According to the municipality sources, fogger machines are used to kill mosquitoes in the Ishwardi municipality once or twice a year. However, this year the municipality’s cleaning department has not yet been able to carry out the activities. Due to this, the mosquito problem has increased.
Sourav Debnath of Nurmahalla in the city said, “Due to the presence of so many mosquitoes in the house and in the area, it is impossible to sit after evening. Even by lighting coils, one cannot get rid of mosquito bites. There are only mosquitoes and mosquitoes everywhere.”
Ornet Pradhan, a student of Aminpara area, said, “Although there is a mosquito infestation throughout the day, this nuisance increases greatly after evening. As a result, in the evening, we have to sit and read by lighting mosquito coils or spraying. Even, we have to study under mosquito nets, being disturbed by the mosquito infestation. Many are getting sick due to mosquito bites.” Businessman Abir Hossain said, “Drains, ponds, and canals are not cleaned regularly. If they had taken steps before the summer season arrived, there would not have been so much mosquito infestation.”
Ruhel Hossain of the cleanliness department of Ishwardi Municipality said that during the mosquito breeding season, fogger machines are sprayed with medicine to kill mosquitoes. But due to lack of budget allocation, the fogger machines were not sprayed with medicine this time. Stating that the drains of each ward are cleaned regularly, he said that the activities of cleaning drains, sewers and bushes are carried out throughout the year.
Municipal Executive Officer Zahurul Islam said, “Mosquitoes were not killed with fogger machines this time due to lack of medicine. However, the year-round mosquito killing program is ongoing. Steps will be taken to start spraying medicine with fogger machines.”
Resident physician of the hospital, Dr. Shahriar Shishir, said that mosquitoes breed from February to May. During this time, people are more affected by diseases caused by mosquito bites. People are infected with Anopheles and malaria due to mosquito bites. Among them, the number of children is more. Aedes mosquitoes spread during the monsoon. Which is dangerous, everyone needs to be aware of this.
