BNP leader Ishraque Hossain has accused the interim government of defying the court by delaying his swearing-in as Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), warning that this is their “last chance” before tougher protests begin.

Joining a protest in front of Nagar Bhaban on Thursday afternoon, Ishraque declared that the government was in clear contempt of court. His supporters have been demonstrating for 16 consecutive days, demanding that he be officially instated as mayor.

The ongoing protest, led by BNP members, DSCC employees, and supporters under the banner of “Dhakabasi” (Residents of Dhaka), first began on May 14 and resumed Thursday following a 48-hour break.

Speaking at the rally, Ishraque stated, “The Supreme Court of Bangladesh has dismissed the appeal filed against my mayorship, thereby upholding the Election Commission’s gazette naming me as mayor. This reaffirms our faith in the rule of law.”

He emphasized that the legal process had been followed properly, saying, “From the very beginning, we have shown respect for the rule of law. Today’s verdict confirms that our case was legitimate and grounded in justice.”

However, he accused the interim administration of obstructing the process: “The interim government has shown bias and interfered in both the judiciary and administration by refusing to administer my oath. This is a clear violation of the court’s authority and a failure to uphold the Election Commission’s decision.”

Warning of an escalation, Ishraque said, “If the oath-taking ceremony is not arranged immediately, it will confirm to the Appellate Division that this government is acting in contempt of court.”

Issuing a final ultimatum, he added, “I appeal one last time to the interim government—initiate my swearing-in at once. Otherwise, starting tomorrow, we will intensify our movement with the full support of the people of Dhaka.”
