International Women’s Day 2025 was observed in Sylhet on Saturday with various day-long programmes on the theme of rights, equality, empowerment, and development of women and girls. In order to celebrate the day with due dignity, various programs including women’s rallies, processions, writing and painting competitions, discussion meetings, and drama performances were organized by the district administration, Department of Women’s Affairs, government-non-government and socio-cultural organizations.
Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad delivered the speech as the chief guest at the discussion meeting organized by the District Administration and Department of Women’s Affairs, Sylhet.
Deputy Director (Local Government) Suborna Sarkar, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Md. Nurer Zaman Chowdhury, lawyer of the Women’s Lawyers Association and the Conscious Citizens Committee Syeda Shirin Akhter, BRAC Divisional Manager Ripon Chandra Mondal, General Secretary of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad Rawshan Ara Mukul. Shahina Akhter, Deputy Director of the Department of Women’s Affairs, Sylhet, delivered the welcome speech.
The speakers at the discussion meeting said that the day is being celebrated worldwide in various ways to prevent violence against women, ensure equal rights for women and men, recognize women’s work, and celebrate economic, political and social achievements. To further advance women, we need to reduce violence against them and ensure their rights, and both men and women need to work together to build a prosperous Bangladesh.
They also said that the government is working to establish equal status for women in society as well as to empower them economically, socially and politically. Currently, the country is gradually moving forward through the successful participation of women in all fields including business, politics, judiciary, administration, diplomacy, armed forces, law enforcement, and peacekeeping missions.
After the discussion meeting, the guests, at the initiative of the Department of Women’s Affairs, Sylhet, distributed sewing machines among women entrepreneurs and prizes among the winners of various competitions.
