The National Review Committee on the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources has recommended that the interim government should engage a reputed legal and investigative firm to assist in reviewing major power generation contracts signed during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure (2009-2024).
At a meeting held on Sunday, the committee, led by Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury, resolved that additional time is needed for in-depth analysis of various solicited and unsolicited contracts.
According to the Chief Adviser’s press wing, the committee is gathering evidence that could potentially lead to renegotiation or cancellation of contracts under international arbitration laws and procedures.
“To facilitate this process, we recommend the immediate engagement of one or more top-tier international legal and investigative firms to support our efforts,” the resolution stated.
The committee emphasised that its investigations must adhere to international standards to ensure credibility in negotiations and arbitration. It is currently conducting detailed investigations into several key contracts, including Adani (Godda) BIFPCL 1234.
4MW coal-fired power plant, Payra 1320MW coal-fired power plant, Meghnaghat 335MW dual-fuel power plant, Ashuganj 195MW gas power plant, Banshkhali 612MW coal-fired power plant, Meghnaghat 583MW dual-fuel power plant and Meghnaghat 584MW gas/RLNG power plant.
The committee’s findings and recommendations aim to ensure transparency and alignment with international best practices in reviewing these major energy projects.
