Sylhet Office :
International Forest Day was celebrated in Sylhet with the theme “Forest conservation, forest for food”.
On this occasion, a discussion meeting was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room on Sunday morning, organized by the District Administration and Forest Department, Sylhet.
Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad was present as the chief guest at the discussion meeting.
The Deputy Commissioner said at the meeting, “There is no alternative to tree plantation to maintain the balance of nature and the environment. Tree plantation plays a very important role in maintaining the balance of oxygen-carbon dioxide in the air, improving the environment, combating the adverse effects of climate change, conserving biodiversity and improving socio-economic conditions.”
The meeting was presided over by Sylhet Divisional Forest Officer Md. Humayun Kabir.
Assistant Conservator of Forests Md. Nazmul Alam, Sylhet Range Officer Md. Shahidullah and other officials of the Forest Department were present at the discussion meeting.
Speakers at the event said that Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, so its forest resources are much less than what is needed. Planting, caring for and conserving trees is very important to prevent the negative effects of climate change and create a safe and sustainable environment. They said that fruit, forest and herbal tree seedlings should be planted extensively, which will not only maintain ecological balance but also provide food and nutrition.
The speakers also said that preserving natural forests is the need of the hour. Protecting forests will not only preserve biodiversity, but also increase the water source in streams and rivers. They urged the City Corporation and District Council to come forward to protect Sylhet’s forests and wildlife.
Representatives of civil society, journalists, and beneficiaries of the Forest Department were present at the event.
