At a meeting the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing on Saturday affirmed the interim government’s strong commitment to holding a credible and flawless national election.
“The last three consecutive elections were nothing more than a farce-mere mockeries in the name of democracy,” said Abul Kalam Azad Mazumder, Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser.
He emphasized that this time, the government is resolute in its efforts to establish an environment where citizens can exercise their voting rights freely and without fear.
Mazumder made these remarks while speaking at a views-exchange meeting with government officials, journalists, and civil society representatives at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall.
He stressed that a level playing field would be ensured for all political parties, as the interim government remains neutral and does not represent any political interest. “This time, the mistakes of the past will not be repeated,” he said.
He further noted that the law and order situation would be brought under control by any means necessary ahead of the election.
Mazumder said Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has already instructed law enforcement agencies to complete all necessary preparations by December for the upcoming parliamentary polls.
Deputy Commissioner Afia Akhter, Additional Deputy Commissioner Mirza Amin Ahmed, Senior Assistant Press Secretary Foyez Ahmmad, and Assistant Press Secretary Suchismita Tithi also addressed the gathering.
Responding to a question, Mazumder said the government is working to support the media and its professionals and has made notable progress in this area.
“Necessary steps will be taken to ensure that journalists can carry out their responsibilities freely and independently throughout the election period,” he added.
In response to another question, Mazumder said Bangladesh has moved up 16 positions in the global mass-media index over the past year, reversing the 44-place decline suffered under the previous fascist regime.
