India supports stable, democratic BD

Staff Reporter :

India has reiterated its support for a stable, peaceful, inclusive, and progressive Bangladesh, emphasising that all issues should be resolved through democratic means and inclusive elections.

Expressing concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Bangladesh, India has noted that the release of violent extremists convicted of serious crimes has further aggravated tensions.

During a media briefing in New Delhi on Friday, Randhir Jaiswal, the official spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), highlighted India’s position on the current developments in Bangladesh.

He underscored the importance of democratic processes in maintaining stability and peace in the neighbouring country. In reply to a question, Jaiswal provided an update on the recently held 86th meeting of the Ganges Water Technical Committee.

The meeting took place in Kolkata on March 6 as part of the structured engagement between India and Bangladesh under the Ganges Water Treaty of 1996.

According to Jaiswal, such meetings are routine and occur twice a year to address technical aspects of the treaty.

The latest discussions focused on issues related to the measurement of water flow and other matters of mutual interest.

Both sides reiterated their commitment to the effective implementation of the treaty, ensuring equitable water-sharing arrangements between the two nations.

The Ganges Water Treaty, signed in 1996, governs the distribution of water from the Ganges River between India and Bangladesh, a key issue in bilateral relations. The structured technical meetings help in maintaining transparency and cooperation in water management.
