The Indian Army has operationalised a new military base in North Dinajpur district of West Bengal and is in the process of raising another military station in Dhubri, Assam, to bolster its presence along the border with Bangladesh, reports The Deccan Chronicle.
According to the Hyderabad-based English daily, the move is being undertaken “with an eye on the current political turbulence in Bangladesh,” suggesting that India is recalibrating its eastern frontier strategy amid unfolding developments across the border.
On Thursday, Eastern Army Commander Lieutenant General R.C. Tiwari visited the newly operational base at Chopra in North Dinajpur, situated close to the Bangladesh frontier.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Eastern Command said, “Lt Gen R.C.
Tiwari, #ArmyCdrEC, visited the troops of #BrahmastraCorps deployed at #ChopraDefenceLand. He interacted with the troops and complimented their unwavering zeal, professionalism, and tireless efforts in establishing and operationalising the base in a minimal timeframe.”
The army commander urged the troops to “maintain the highest standards of operational preparedness” and remain proactive in responding to “evolving security challenges.”
During the visit, Lt Gen Tiwari also met with local lawmaker Hamidul Rahaman, MLA of Chopra constituency, and other civil dignitaries.
The Eastern Command described the meeting as an affirmation of “the importance of military-civil cooperation in fostering security and development in the region.”
Lt Gen Tiwari later travelled to Assam’s Dhubri district, where he laid the foundation stone for the Lachit Borpukhan Military Station under the 4 (Gajraj) Corps.
“The establishment of this station marks a significant step in further strengthening the operational capabilities and infrastructure of the Indian Army in the region,” the Eastern Command said in a separate statement, noting that the initiative would enhance the army’s logistical and strategic depth along the Indo-Bangladesh border.
The commander also reviewed operational readiness and internal security conditions in the bordering areas, alongside assessing the progress of ongoing infrastructure development under the Eastern Command.
The latest expansion underscores India’s increasing focus on the eastern theatre amid heightened political uncertainty in Bangladesh following the July Uprising of 2024 and ongoing realignments in Dhaka’s domestic and regional policies.
