Interim Government Adviser Mahfuz Alam on Sunday said India has reportedly made a political decision not to return ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
He made this disclosure while speaking at a dialogue hosted by the foreign affairs ministry on Sunday, Alam shed light on the matter during dialogue on “Building a New Bangladesh: Reform and Foreign Policy” moderated by Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin.
“Our observation is that they have made a political decision that they will not return her or we are hearing as such,” Mahfuz said when asked whether the issue was discussed or they have any observation regarding Hasina’s stay in India.
He said, “We must be realistic. We cannot make any hasty decisions, keeping in mind that foreign policy should not change with a change in government. Our priority is to safeguard our sovereignty, national security, and territorial integrity.”
“We want to boost our capacity to enhance bargaining strength in the international arena, the government puts Bangladesh’s interest on top of its priorities,” he added.
Information and Broadcasting Adviser Nahid Islam also joined the dialogue.
