4 more RMG factories achieve LEED certification: Increasing LEED standard to strengthen BD’s export growth
Business Report:
Bangladesh’s Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector has achieved yet another significant milestone in its journey towards environmental sustainability, with four new garment factories earning the prestigious LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This development reinforces the country’s unwavering commitment to green industrialization and sustainable manufacturing, setting an inspiring example for other apparel-producing nations.
The newly certified facilities are: Advance Attire Ltd, located in Phukuria along the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Manikganj, has earned LEED Platinum status, scoring an outstanding 96 points-placing it among the top-performing green factories globally.
Amanat Shah Fabrics Ltd (Woven Composite Unit), situated in Vatpara, Panchdona, Narsingdi, achieved LEED Platinum certification with a commendable score of 82 points.
Cotton Field BD Ltd (Production Building), located at Rajnagar on Sataish Road in Tongi, Gazipur, received LEED Platinum certification by securing 83 points, showcasing its excellence in sustainable infrastructure.
KM Apparel Knit Pvt Ltd, based in the Chonpara area under Uttarkhan in Dhaka, was awarded LEED Gold certification with a solid score of 62 points, reflecting its compliance with advanced environmental benchmarks.
With the addition of these four factories, the total number of LEED-certified RMG facilities in Bangladesh has risen to 248-a remarkable achievement that includes 105 Platinum and 129 Gold-certified units. These numbers solidify Bangladesh’s position as a global frontrunner in environmentally responsible apparel manufacturing.
Mohiuddin Rubel, Additional Managing Director of Denim Expert Ltd, Managing Director of Bangladesh Apparel Exchange Ltd, and former director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), commented on this achievement, stating that Bangladesh now proudly hosts nine of the world’s top 10, and 68 of the top 100, highest-rated LEED-certified garment factories. He emphasized that this continued expansion of green-certified facilities is a strong indicator of the RMG sector’s visionary approach to sustainable development.
The LEED certification-one of the most recognized global symbols of sustainability achievement-evaluates buildings based on criteria such as energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor environmental quality, material usage, and innovation in design. In the context of the RMG sector, obtaining LEED status reflects a factory’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint while ensuring a healthier workplace for its employees.
This growing shift towards green industrial practices is not merely symbolic-it carries substantial business advantages. Global buyers, especially in the EU and North America, are increasingly prioritizing sustainability in their sourcing decisions. Brands are under pressure to meet stricter Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards, and Bangladesh’s green factories give them a clear competitive edge. LEED certification not only enhances a factory’s brand image but also opens doors to premium markets and long-term partnerships with eco-conscious brands.
