Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor (PP) Omar Faruk Faruki has claimed that the incident of an alleged assault on an advocate representing Awami League leader Amir Hossain Amu was fabricated. Speaking at a press conference at his office in the capital’s court premises on Friday.  Faruki stated that no lawyer from the prosecution assaulted the advocate who claimed to represent Amu.

According to PP Faruki, a dispute arose in court on Thursday over multiple power of attorney submissions by different lawyers on behalf of Amu, which led to some disorder. Following this, one group reportedly forced the advocate out of the courtroom.

He added that, based on statements from Amu’s actual legal representatives, the individual claiming to be Amu’s lawyer was not genuinely part of his defense team. Faruki accused certain parties of staging the incident to mislead the public deliberately.

The incident reportedly occurred during a hearing on Amu’s remand plea before Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza, where PP Faruki represented the state in favor of granting the remand. However, when Amu’s defense lawyer, Advocate Swapan Roy Chowdhury, began his arguments, he described the prosecution’s statement as politically motivated. This comment allegedly triggered a reaction from several lawyers present in court, who then began to assault him, causing him to fall near the courtroom door, where he was reportedly kicked. Later, other lawyers intervened and safely escorted him out.
