ILO support in protecting workers’ rights sought

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq sought cooperation from international community, including International Labour Organization (ILO), for protecting the rights of all working class people.
He sought the cooperation on Monday while addressing the 341st session of ILO Governing Body on ‘Labour Situation in Bangladesh’ joining it on virtual platform, said a press release.
Anisul assured the ILO that Bangladesh decided to work under a six-year work-plan to ensure workers’ right and safe working environment.
The minister said the work-plan’s tenure is being prepared keeping consistency with Bangladesh’s final graduation from the list of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in 2026.
He informed the session about amendment of labour act, registration of trade union, empowerment of the department of inspection for factories and fixing specific action plan on stopping anti-labour right activities.
Bangladesh is working to lessen child labour in light with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), he added.
ILO Governing Body Chairman and Indian Labour Secretary Apurva Chandra chaired the session while representatives of India, China, Russia, Morocco, Cuba, Iraq, Bahrain, Azerbaijan, Canada, the USA, Switzerland, Germany and Mexico and international labour and workers’ association joined it.
Many of the discussants lauded Bangladesh effective measures in facing the coronavirus pandemic.
