In a coordinated drive, Joint forces evicted 70 illegal shops clearing footpaths in the capital’s Airport Roundabout area on Wednesday.

The drive led, by the Special Judicial Magistrate Md Asaduzzaman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), included personnel from Uttara Division Police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the Army, reports BSS.

“The drive has been conducted to reduce traffic congestion on the highway, prevent pickpockets and robberies . . . 70 different types of illegal structures were evicted in the operation,” Uttara Division Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) Md Mohidul Islam told BSS on Thursday.

He said there is no scope for setting up shops on both sides of the highway. If anyone tries to set up illegal shops, legal action will be taken immediately.

“We initially persuaded the shopkeepers to leave no one was arrested or fined in this drive,” he added.
