Sylhet Bureau :
Police have seized illegal Indian cosmetics worth about 2.5 crore taka from the Charkhai area of Beanibazar in Sylhet.

Two people have been arrested on charges of involvement in the incident. The arrested are Zahed Ahmed (24), son of Sainul Haque, of Satpari village in Kanaighat, and Hasan Imran (20), son of Moin Uddin.

On Saturday (August 9), around 8:30 am, a search was conducted in the Charkhai area after receiving secret information about the smuggling of these cosmetics products manufactured in India under the cover of stones from different areas of Zakiganj and Kanaighat upazilas near the border. At one point, a truck loaded with stones and cosmetics was intercepted at a police check post on the Kaskatkha-Lalpur bridge. Later, 74 cartons of ‘Skinshine’ and 28 cartons of ‘Ultrabright’, a so-called beauty enhancement cream, were found in the truck at Charkhai camp.

Police said that these products were being illegally transported from the border to other places in a truck loaded with stones. The seized products were mainly being sold in the market as so-called beauty enhancement creams.

SI Hossain, in-charge of Charkhai police outpost, said that the estimated market value of the seized products is Tk 2 crore 43 lakh 84 thousand. The products were seized after conducting a raid based on secret information under the supervision of Sylhet Police Superintendent Mahbubur Rahman and Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Beanibazar Police Station Ashraf Uzzaman. The truck was also seized on charges of transporting illegal goods.

Beanibazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ashraf Uzzaman said that these goods were being illegally smuggled elsewhere by evading huge amounts of revenue. Necessary legal action has been taken against the arrested.
