The Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) has resumed financing support for solar irrigation pumps (SIPs), aiming to accelerate Bangladesh’s transition to clean energy in agriculture. The move comes with a renewed strategy and structure, officials said.
A signing ceremony for the new phase of the program was held on 14 October 2025 at IDCOL’s Multipurpose Conference Hall in Dhaka.
Under the initiative, IDCOL approved Tk 34.9 crore in financing for the WAVE Foundation, supported by Germany’s KfW, to install 56 solar irrigation pumps, including 39 grid-integrated systems, in Chuadanga, Jhenaidah, and Kushtia districts.
Speaking at the event, IDCOL Executive Director and CEO Alamgir Morshed said the initiative is part of the company’s broader target of deploying 10,000 solar irrigation pumps by 2030, supporting sustainable and cost-effective farming.
The ceremony was attended by Michael Sumser-Hellstern, Director of KfW Bangladesh, along with senior officials from SREDA, the Power Division, and IDCOL.
IDCOL has so far financed 1,495 solar pumps, accounting for 42% of the national market. These pumps irrigate over 34,445 hectares during the paddy season, benefiting more than 70,000 farmers and replacing approximately 17,000 diesel-powered pumps.
Officials said the program is expected to reduce carbon emissions, lower irrigation costs, and strengthen energy security in rural areas.
By expanding partnerships in renewable energy, IDCOL aims to further accelerate Bangladesh’s green transformation, promoting sustainable agriculture while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
