The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on Sunday directed authorities to produce Shahriar Kabir, former president of the Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, before the court on 12 January in a case involving crimes against humanity.
The order was issued by a tribunal bench led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, following a prosecution petition.
Kabir has been summoned in connection with allegations tied to the deaths that occurred during the Hefazat-e-Islam demonstration at Motijheel’s Shapla Chattar on 5 May 2013.
On 20 August last year, Mufti Harun Izhar Chowdhury Hefazat-e-Islam’s joint secretary general (education and law) lodged allegations of crimes against humanity and genocide against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 23 others, including Shahriar Kabir, with the tribunal.
Kabir was arrested on 17 September last year in Dhaka’s Banani area following the July Uprising.
Police later charged him in several cases linked to the movement, and he has remained in custody since his arrest.
