The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has ordered Mohammad Sohael, former Director of the Legal and Media Wing of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), to appear before the court on June 18 in connection with a case involving crimes against humanity related to abduction and enforced disappearance.
The order was issued on Tuesday by the three-member tribunal headed by Chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder.
Following the order, Prosecutor Mizanul Islam told reporters: “Around 2012, RAB members abducted Golam Morturza Nihim, a member of Islami Chhatra Shibir, from Rabindra Sarobar in Dhanmondi.
He was then detained for 47 days at a secret detention center known as ‘Aynaghar’ (the mirror house). This crime against humanity was committed under Sohael’s directives.”
Mohammad Sohael had been serving as chairman of the Chattogram Port Authority for over a year.
Before assuming that role on April 12, 2023, he served as chairman of the Payra Port Authority from February 27, 2022. After the fall of the Awami League government, he was removed from the post on August 7 and reassigned as Commander of Training and Doctrine in the Bangladesh Navy.
