The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has found evidence of enforced disappearance, rape, and torture against former additional superintendent of police (ASP) of Barishal Range and RAB commander Alep Uddin.

ICT Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam made the announcement to the media on Thursday.

“The charges against him [Alep] are most serious. He was involved in the enforced disappearance and torture of countless people. This Alep Uddin disappeared and kept them locked up for years. He tortured them in the cruelest ways” Tajul told journalists while Alep was produced in the tribunal on Thursday.

He said the most egregious crime committed by Alep Uddin was threatening the wife of an enforced disappearance victim with her husband’s murder and repeatedly raping her during the month of Ramadan. He further alleged that Alep forced the woman to break her fast before subjecting her to sexual assault, citing evidence and testimonies supporting these claims.

“The former ASP is accused of torturing [victims] with electric shocks, blindfolding, and beating after hanging them upside down,” he added.

He noted that the tribunal has been informed of the matter.

The chief prosecutor said the investigation into Alep Uddin’s crimes will take time, as new allegations continue to emerge from victims daily. He emphasised that the investigation agency is working tirelessly to gather evidence and prepare a comprehensive report, which will pave the way for the formal trial process.

Alep was produced along with former superintendent of police (SP) of Betbunia Police Special Training Centre Mohiuddin Farooqui.

Alep Uddin was arrested from the Barishal metropolitan area on the night of 13 November, and Farooqui was arrested from the Kaukhali (Betbunia) area of Rangamati district on the same day.
