International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam said on Thursday that the prosecution has gathered evidence of a conspiracy aimed at obstructing the trial of the July-August massacre.
“We have uncovered substantial information and evidence indicating efforts to derail the tribunal’s proceedings regarding the July-August mass killing. Additionally, we have identified the masterminds behind this scheme,” he told journalists on Thursday.
He further assured that necessary actions would be taken against the conspirators at an appropriate time.
On Wednesday, Tajul had mentioned that the prosecution received a draft probe report concerning a case filed against Sheikh Hasina in connection with the July-August mass killing. He added that a formal charge would be submitted once the final report is received.
Earlier, on March 27, the chief prosecutor revealed that they had obtained a draft probe report regarding crimes against humanity committed at Chankharpul, where five people were fatally shot on August 5. He mentioned that the report would soon be presented to the tribunal.
ICT Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said that over 300 complaints have so far been lodged with the International Crimes Tribunal’s prosecution, detailing allegations of murders, mass killings aimed at suppressing the student movement in July-August, enforced disappearances, and other crimes against humanity committed over the past 15 years.
He also noted that the complaints include the mass killing at Motijheel Shapla Square on May 5, 2013.
According to Tamim, out of these complaints, 23 have been formally filed as cases, and arrest warrants have been issued for 145 individuals. Among them, approximately 50 accused persons have already been taken into custody, he added.
