The Chief Prosecutor’s Office of the International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) is set to submit formal charges this Sunday, 29 June, in connection with the murder of Abu Sayed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, who was killed during the July 2024 uprising in Rangpur.

Senior Prosecutor Mizanul Islam made the announcement on Wednesday (26 June), stating that the charges will be placed before the tribunal headed by Justice Md Nazrul Islam Chowdhury. “We have received the investigation report into the killing of Abu Sayed and, after thorough review, are now prepared to formally present the charges to the court,” he said while addressing the media.

The investigation agency earlier submitted its findings, identifying 30 individuals allegedly involved in the killing that occurred on 16 July 2024, amid mass protests in Rangpur.
However, when asked for details, Prosecutor Mizanul refrained from naming the accused at this stage.

“For the sake of investigation confidentiality and to prevent any suspects from fleeing, we cannot disclose the names of the 30 individuals before the formal charge is filed with the court,” he clarified.

The case has drawn significant public attention, given its impact on sparking the wider unrest during last year’s political turmoil.
