The police have arrested Babul Ahmed and his wife, the main accused in the murder that took place over a land dispute in Barachatul union of Kanaighat upazila in Sylhet.
They were arrested while hiding from a house in Haratail village of Jaintapur upazila on Wednesday morning, said Kanaighat police station officer-in-charge (OC) Abdul Awal.
The murder took place at around 5 pm on Tuesday (September 16) in Haratail Rangarai village of the upazila. The deceased Nurul Islam alias Sana (50) was a day laborer of the local Chatul Bazar.
Local sources said that Nurul Islam and his cousin Babul Ahmed had been in a dispute over land for a long time. On the day of the incident, tension arose between the two families when one of Nurul Islam’s children defecated in Babul’s boundary. At one stage, Babul Ahmed, his son Mumin Ahmed and family members attacked Nurul Islam’s house with country-made weapons. Nurul Islam, his wife Rina Begum and five children were seriously injured. Locals rescued the injured and took them to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared Nurul Islam dead. Doctors said that Rina Begum’s condition among the injured was critical.
Local UP member Taj Uddin said that the deceased Nurul Islam was a poor and innocent laborer. He has nine children. The family is in serious crisis after losing the only earner in the family. The body of the deceased has been kept at the Osmani Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Meanwhile, Kanaighat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Awal visited the scene at night after receiving the news. SI Nur Hossain, the second officer of the police station, said that a police operation is underway to arrest those involved in the murder and the main accused Babul and his wife have already been arrested.
