A determined human chain protest took place on Thursday in front of Rangpur Agricultural Institute Tajhat, organised by DOPS, CLEAN, and BWGED, amplifying the demand for a swift transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.
This demonstration was part of a broader nationwide movement, commemorating the Bashkhali movement of 2016, where six people tragically lost their lives resisting a destructive coal-based power plant project.
Participants held banners reading “End Fossil Fuel Dependence, Embrace Clean Energy”, voicing their call for an energy policy aligned with environmental sustainability and economic stability.
Speakers at the event underscored the grave risks associated with coal, LNG, and other fossil fuel investments.
They pointed out that the Bashkhali tragedy was a stark reminder of the social and environmental damage these projects bring, from land displacement to pollution and climate hazards.
Experts stressed that Bangladesh is rich in solar and wind energy potential, which should be prioritized to secure an independent and sustainable energy future. “The lives lost in Bashkhali should not be forgotten.
That movement proved how communities resist harmful energy policies.
We demand a just transition to renewables before more damage is done,” said a representative from DOPS Mr, SubalChandra ,Mrs,LipikaYesmin and Youth leader Anikayesmin.
The rally concluded with organizers urging authorities to align national energy policies with climate goals.
The participants pledged to continue their advocacy until Bangladesh achieves a sustainable and just energy system free from fossil fuel dependence.
