Students and locals staged a protest and human chain in Chauddagram, Cumilla, demanding the arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the murder of school student Atik.
The demonstration took place on Wednesday at Chauddagram Bazar along the Dhaka-Chattogram highway.
Following a human chain in front of Chauddagram Government College, the protesters marched through the highway, causing temporary traffic congestion on the Chattogram-bound lane.
The protest was attended by Atik’s classmates and local residents, including Tanvir Hossain, Siam, Mahmud, Tanha Mahmud, Munna, Rocky, Ismail Hossain, Md. Sifat, Mizanur Rahman, Mahruf Ahmed, Rifat Hossain, and Izharul Islam, among others.
During a brief speech at the end of the march, speakers criticized the police for their inaction, which allegedly allowed the perpetrators to flee the area. They urged the authorities to arrest the killers and bring them to justice as soon as possible.
Atik, a 17-year-old SSC examinee of Chauddagram Government Technical School and College, was fatally injured on Tuesday afternoon in an attack by the relatives of a girl, allegedly over a romantic dispute. He succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. The incident sparked tension in the area, leading to further protests on Tuesday evening.
To prevent any untoward situation, additional police forces have been deployed in the area. Atik was the son of Abdul Mannan Mia of Sonakatia Model Village under Chauddagram Municipality.
