The clashes took place from Friday afternoon to evening in three phases. A police constable, Md Sumon, was killed. About 20 to 25 policemen were injured in the clashes.
Quota protesters set fire to a police van at that time.
The conflict began when police fired tear shells to disperse students protesting against killings during the recent quota reform movement.
Earlier, the students brought out a procession from the New Market area of the city after Jumma prayers at around 2:00 PM.
When the students reached the Gallamari area, police fired tear gas at them.
In response, students threw brick chips, resulting in a chase and counter-chase.
However, clashes resumed about an hour later when police again tried to disperse the demonstrators.
