How much have we achieved?

Since we became aware of our national identity, we have recognised the significance of Language Day. Most of us are familiar with its history. However, if we examine our current education system, we find multiple streams-English medium, Madrasa education, and Bengali medium. As a result, the widespread promotion and expansion of the Bengali language are not happening as effectively as they should.
Individuals can belong to any educational background. In this era of globalisation, our education system should align with international standards while reflecting diverse cultures and religions. This is what we refer to as harmony.
If we look at other nations, we see that they have not progressed by neglecting their own language and culture. The same should apply to us. When we discuss the Bengali Language Movement, we acknowledge the significant contributions of those involved.
The events of 1952 did not occur suddenly; they were the result of a series of historical developments. Yet, in 2025, not everyone fully understands the significance of Language Day or its origins. Only students or those who study the subject in depth know the details, while most adults have only a general idea.
Since I personally teach gender issues, I also believe we should consider how inclusive and respectful our language is today. The words we frequently hear in public spaces are often not gender-sensitive or human-friendly. Our everyday language still carries deeply ingrained gender biases.
Language Day should not only be about commemorating those who contributed to the movement. Instead, we should reflect on the purpose behind their struggle wasn’t it fundamentally about resisting discrimination?
