Bangladesh is known for its vibrant and joyous Eid celebrations, where families come together to share happiness, prayers, and festive meals.

However, in recent years, a troubling trend has emerged, one that prioritises noise and extravagance over the true spirit of the occasion.
One of the most disruptive elements of modern Eid celebrations is the excessive use of high-volume sound systems.

Instead of peaceful family gatherings, many neighborhoods are now suffering because of this blaring music, loud announcements, and non-stop DJ beats which are operated by a few delinquent youth that shake entire streets.

The noise pollution continues late into the night, making it nearly impossible for children, the elderly, and those unwell to rest. Complaints from frustrated residents often go unheard, as the so-called “celebrations” take precedence over public comfort.

But the problem doesn’t end there. Eid in Bangladesh has always been about faith, family, and community. The day traditionally begins with prayers, followed by visits to relatives, sharing meals, and helping the less fortunate.

However, the increasing focus on loud parties, street racing, and excessive entertainment is shifting attention away from these values.

Instead of spending time with loved ones or engaging in charity, many are now more concerned with showing off wealth or making the most noise.

“Our country has long upheld strong community-based values, where people support and care for one another. Those undermining this ethos lack a proper understanding of our history, culture, and social norms.

Without focused attention and reform in this area, the broader transformation of our country may lose its significance, because it is these core values that provide stability and social order,” said Al Mamun Harun ur Rashid, senior journalist.

Eid is meant to be a time of unity, kindness, and gratitude. It should bring peace, not headaches as it is not a competition of who can play the loudest music. Such irresponsible behavior creates an environment where laws are ignored, and public safety is compromised.

This cultural shift goes against the traditional Bangladeshi norm of collective responsibility and discipline. As a society, we must rethink how we celebrate this sacred festival.
