The police arrested a woman named Ayesha, who was the main suspect in the case filed over murder of a woman and her daughter at Mohammadpur in Dhaka on Monday, in Jhalakathi on Wednesday.
Jewel Rana, additional deputy commissioner of the Mohammadpur Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said that Ayesha was arrested from Nalchity Upazila.
The bodies of Laila Afroze, 48, and her 15-year-old daughter Nafisa Lawal Binte Aziz were discovered inside their seventh-floor flat on Shahjahan Road on Monday.
Their throats were slit. Ayesha had worked at their house in Mohammadpur.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Jewel said Ayesha is being brought to Dhaka.
The deceased Laila Afroze was 48 years old, and her daughter, Nafisa Lawal Binte Aziz, was 15.
Nafisa was a ninth-grade student at Mohammadpur Preparatory School, while her mother was a homemaker.
AZM Azizul Islam, the husband and father of the victims, is a physics teacher at Sunbeams School in Uttara.
He had left for work early on Monday. He told police he returned home around 11am and discovered the bodies of his wife and daughter lying inside with multiple stab wounds.
CCTV footage from the building showed a young woman entering the flat around 7:51am wearing a burqa and leaving less than two hours later dressed in a school uniform belonging to Nafisa.
After the incident, police took the caretaker, Khalek, into custody for questioning.
He told police that four days earlier, when the woman came seeking work, he had sent her to that flat. He said he did not know her from before.
Based on information obtained from the video footage and the caretaker’s interrogation, police say that when Ayesha arrived on Monday, Khalek let her in as usual.
But when she left wearing a school uniform and with her face covered by a mask, the security guard, who was on duty at the entrance, failed to recognise her.
Meanwhile, in connection with the murders, a court on Tuesday ordered the probe report against the suspect to be submitted by Jan 13.
