Hilsa fishes are not seen in the markets of various districts, including Bagerhat town due to Hilsa exports to India and adverse weather conditions.

The fish of life of the people of Bengal, Hilsa, is incomparable in taste. It is unbeatable in popularity from the past to the present.

The common people of the country are eager for this fish at certain times of the year.

But even in the full season of 2025, it is safe to say thatHilsa is not seen in Bagerhat market as previous.

The price of the few fish that are coming has gone beyond the reach of the common people.

This year, the price has increased several times compared to the last years.

In the meantime, Hilsa exports to India have begun. As a result, Hilsa is now limited to memories or social media pictures for many.

A visit to Sandhya Bazar at Shadhona inter section, Main Bazar footpath, Mithapukurpar and Dashani intersection, Dargasharif market at Ranabigoypur and K B wholesale Hilsa market has increased by an average of 40 to 50 percent this year compared to last year.

Hilsa weighing 500 to 600 grams is being sold for Tk 900 to 1,200 per kg, 700 to 800 grams for Tk 1,500 to 1,600 per kg. In addition, those weighing 900 grams to 1 kg are being sold for Tk 2000 to 2100.

Those weighing 1.2 to 1.3 kg are being sold for Tk. 2200 to 2,700. Last year in Bagerhat, during the peak season, the price of 500-600 grams of Hilsa was 1,000 to 1,200 taka, the price of 700-800 grams of Hilsa was Tk. 1,300 to 1,400, and 900 grams to 1 kg of Hilsa was sold between Tk.1,500 and 1,650.

Afzal Hossain, a shopper at SadhanaSayandha market, lamented, “A kilo of hilsa costs Tk 2,100. Let alone buying it, I don’t even dare to ask the price.”

JamilHossain, a rickshaw puller at Sandhya (Mithapukr Par) market said when it is very difficult to run a family, where is the money to buy hilsa and eat it? Housewife Zenia Akhter at Muniganj market said, “Even in the peak season, hilsa is out of reach. Now, I have to fill my heart just by looking at pictures on Facebook.”

K B fish landing and wholesale sea fish market situated on the bank of the River Daratana in Bagerhat Pourashava area have long been known for landing hilsa.

Fishing trawlers and boats used to arrive at this market throughout the year. The shimmering form of hilsa would spread everywhere. But this time, the scene is completely different.
