In a landmark move, the Minister for Finance, Abul Hasan Mahmood Ali, unveiled the budget for the fiscal year 2024/2025 at the National Parliament on Thursday, with a significant emphasis on the development of sports infrastructure and talent nurturing.
The budget proposal marks a historic allocation of Taka 2,295 crore for the Ministry of Youth and Sports, reflecting the government’s commitment to promoting sports and recreation across the nation.
A detailed breakdown of the budget reveals Taka 1,234 crore 8 lakh earmarked for the development sector, aimed at constructing and enhancing sports facilities nationwide. Additionally, Taka 977 crore 87 lakh has been allocated for the supervision sector, ensuring effective management and oversight of sports-related initiatives.
One of the key highlights of the budget is the ambitious plan to construct Sheikh Russel Mini Stadiums in all upazilas, alongside the establishment of stadiums and swimming pools in various districts and upazilas. Furthermore, the proposal includes the construction of a stadium in honor of former President Abdul Hamid in Mithamain upazila of Kishoreganj district, underscoring the government’s commitment to recognizing and preserving national legacies.
Presenting the budget under the theme of ‘Happy, Develop, and Smart Bangladesh,’ the Finance Minister outlined a comprehensive strategy to revitalize the sports sector. This includes the implementation of 20 infrastructure development projects aimed at modernizing sports arenas and facilities nationwide.
In a bid to identify and nurture sporting talent, the Minister emphasized the importance of recruiting experienced coaches and providing them with the necessary resources to support emerging athletes. Furthermore, the budget proposal includes provisions for increased donations to sports federations and associations, as well as the distribution of sports equipment to various organizations, facilitating grassroots participation and development.
